We are so glad Maribel was willing to share her success story with you all. Her story shows that putting our health first allows us to become the best version of ourselves and helps us excel in all aspects of life.

Her story also shows that with determination and hard work, you can achieve your health goals.

Before GrassRoots

Maribel was experiencing brain fog, anxiety, numbness and tingling in her toes, as well as weakness. She also struggled to sleep at night and suffered from night sweats. These symptoms, over time, caused her to develop infection after infection. Before becoming sick, she was an avid runner, running nearly fifteen miles per week. However, her symptoms forced her to stop doing what she loved.

She saw multiple doctors who either wanted to put her on more medications or they did not have an answer to her issues. It seemed as if they gave her one hundred possibilities of what she could be dealing with, including debilitating diseases like ALS, yet they were not providing her with real solutions, which was quite intimidating and nerve-racking for her.

Her devotion to finding answers for her condition led her to GrassRoots Functional Medicine.

Finding Answers

Once Maribel joined GrassRoots, we started with comprehensive blood work, stool testing, and urine samples that went deeper than the testing she had done with her primary care doctor. This allowed us to get a picture of what was going on with Maribel.

As Maribel put it, “I knew that I was going in the right direction because I felt the approach wasn’t just one single variable; it was the whole body that GrassRoots was looking at. It wasn’t just the neurology side or the gynecology side.”

Once the results came back, we were able to diagnose her with Lyme Disease. Which explained why conventional doctors were suggesting her condition could be a multitude of things. Lyme disease and its co-infections can mimic hundreds of other diseases. Symptoms of Lyme disease cross with conditions like fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain Barre, anxiety, and many other diagnoses, all things she was told she could possibly be dealing with.

Diet, Detox, and Lifestyle Changes

Using the information gathered from her lab tests, we were able to find the root cause of Maribel’s symptoms and develop a treatment plan tailored to her. We determined that she would need to begin a detox protocol and anti-inflammatory diet to reduce the toxic burden on her body and support her natural immune system.

Starting on a Paleo diet removed foods from her diet that were contributing to her symptoms and provided the fuel her body needed to function optimally Best of all, learning how to eat better, what to eat, and what not to eat (and why!) gave her a strong foundation for lifelong healthy eating with results that will last far beyond her treatment. Though making this change was hard, she could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, as she began to feel better.

“Once I finally got the diagnosis of Lyme disease and we started focusing on that problem, a lot of things started getting better. That was the crucial piece that was missing, that definitive diagnosis. I didn’t want to put a bandaid on it; I wanted to work on the problem that was affecting everything. – Maribel

She also learned about mindfulness at GrassRoots and that she had to be in a good frame of mind to facilitate the physical healing of her body. This is a core reason we address each individual as a whole; we always have our patients work with our team to learn mindfulness and positivity to empower them to facilitate these changes for their bodies. We understand that dealing with a condition and its symptoms can affect your mental health. Therefore, this approach enables patients to feel better both mentally and physically.

“I think once you start treating the whole body, it becomes a whole. I think that’s how I started to feel a little bit better mentally, physically; the approach was perfect for me.” – Maribel.

Her Results:

Since implementing her personalized protocol, Maribel reports that her sleeping and anxiety are much better, the night sweats have improved, and the multiple infections that she was getting went away. To this day she hasn’t had another infection!

She attributes much of that to eating better and supporting the detox process. As she put it, “My liver was probably thanking me!”

Every day she is getting better, experiencing more energy, and she is walking farther distances to work up to running again.

One area she had to really grapple with was putting herself first. Many of our patients are moms and they tend to prioritize everyone over themselves. Focusing so much on her own health felt selfish at first, but she has seen how putting her health first transformed her into the best version of herself, not only for her but also her family. We hear this from many patients, when they’re feeling better they are better parents, spouses, employees, bosses, and more.

Adaptation Program

The proper diagnosis can be life-changing. Unfortunately, it is common, in conventional medicine, for the root cause to be overlooked and while providers only manage the symptoms a person is experiencing. However, at GrassRoots we look deeper to determine the root cause and begin transforming your health from the ground up.

In our program you’ll learn how to address the issues by facilitating lifestyle changes, nutrition and supplementation plans, and you’ll have access to our supportive GrassRoots community.

Here’s what Maribel had to say about the Adaptation Program:

“I love the team aspect that GrassRoots has. It’s a great program, and  I’m glad I did it. It’s an investment, because it’s something that you’re going to have and that you will continually learn from and use. I talk to people about GrassRoots all the time. Anybody could really learn a lot from the program, whether you’re sick or not, just to be healthy, to learn. I just wish that I had done it so many years before it got out of hand. I was trying to get help and it just wasn’t working out with the other physicians. They had their time and place, but I know for me GrassRoots was what I needed, and I’m glad that I found GrassRoots.”

The Adaptation Program is a partnership that provides guidance, support, and accountability. We truly want to see you succeed and feel the difference.
